Critical Safety Warning

Brake system maintenance is safety-critical. Improper bleeding can result in brake failure. If you're not confident in your abilities, seek professional service. Always test brakes thoroughly before riding.

Brake Bleeding Overview

Brake bleeding removes air bubbles from the brake system, ensuring proper brake feel and maximum stopping power. Air in the brake lines compresses under pressure, resulting in a spongy brake lever and reduced braking performance.

Schedule

When to Bleed

Bleed brakes every 2 years, after brake fluid change, brake service, or whenever the lever feels spongy.

Duration

Time Required

Allow 30-45 minutes for complete front and rear brake system bleeding including preparation and cleanup.

Motorcycle brake tools and parts

Required Tools & Materials

Item Specification Purpose Notes
DOT 4 Brake Fluid 500ml minimum Brake system fluid Never use DOT 3 or DOT 5
Brake Bleeding Kit With clear tubing Bleeding procedure Or clear tubing and container
8mm Box Wrench For bleed nipples Opening bleed valves Must fit properly to avoid rounding
Small Funnel Brake fluid compatible Refilling reservoir Avoid spilling fluid
Clean Rags Lint-free Cleanup Brake fluid damages paint
Nitrile Gloves Chemical resistant Hand protection Brake fluid is harmful to skin
Safety Glasses Impact rated Eye protection Prevent fluid splashing in eyes

Step-by-Step Procedure

Preparation

  1. Position motorcycle on center stand on level ground
  2. Remove fairings to access brake components if necessary
  3. Clean around brake fluid reservoir caps
  4. Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves
  5. Cover painted surfaces with rags to protect from brake fluid

Front Brake Bleeding

  1. Remove front brake fluid reservoir cap
  2. Check fluid level and top off with fresh DOT 4 brake fluid
  3. Locate bleed nipple on right caliper (outboard side)
  4. Attach clear bleeding tube to bleed nipple
  5. Place other end of tube in container with small amount of brake fluid
  6. Pump brake lever slowly 3-4 times, hold lever in
  7. With lever held, open bleed nipple 1/4 turn
  8. Allow fluid and air to flow out, then close nipple
  9. Release brake lever and repeat process
  10. Continue until no air bubbles appear in tube
  11. Repeat process for left caliper
  12. Top off reservoir and replace cap

Rear Brake Bleeding

  1. Remove rear brake fluid reservoir cap
  2. Check fluid level and top off with fresh DOT 4 brake fluid
  3. Locate bleed nipple on rear caliper
  4. Attach clear bleeding tube to bleed nipple
  5. Place other end of tube in container with brake fluid
  6. Pump brake pedal slowly 3-4 times, hold pedal down
  7. With pedal held, open bleed nipple 1/4 turn
  8. Allow fluid and air to flow out, then close nipple
  9. Release brake pedal and repeat process
  10. Continue until no air bubbles appear in tube
  11. Top off reservoir and replace cap

Final Steps & Testing

  1. Check all reservoir fluid levels and top off if needed
  2. Ensure all bleed nipples are tightened to specification (8 Nm)
  3. Clean any spilled brake fluid immediately
  4. Test brake lever/pedal feel - should be firm with no sponginess
  5. Reinstall any removed fairings
  6. Test brakes at low speed before normal riding
  7. Dispose of old brake fluid properly at recycling center

Troubleshooting

Problem Possible Cause Solution
Spongy brake feel persists Air still in system Repeat bleeding procedure, check for leaks
No fluid flow from nipple Blocked bleed nipple Remove and clean nipple, replace if damaged
Brake lever goes to handlebar Major air in system or leak Check for leaks, may need professional service
Fluid level drops quickly Brake system leak Stop procedure, inspect system for leaks
Dirty fluid continues to flow Old fluid in system Continue bleeding until fluid runs clear

Important Notes

Fluid

Brake Fluid Type

Use only DOT 4 brake fluid. Never mix different brake fluid types. DOT 5 is NOT compatible with ZX-6R brake systems.

Safety

Paint Protection

Brake fluid will damage paint immediately. Cover all painted surfaces and clean spills immediately with water.

Testing

Brake Testing

Always test brakes thoroughly at low speed before normal riding. Verify firm lever feel and proper stopping power.
